Clinical Trial for treating RRP with Celebrex - 2009 Update

The Department of Otolaryngology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJ) is conducting a multi-centered NIH-sponsored research study of Celebrex (celecoxib) for the treatment of RRP (Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis). Celebrex has been shown to be effective in treating other types of benign tumors, including those caused by the same types of human papillomaviruses that cause RRP. Participating sites are LIJ, the University of Iowa, the University of California at San Francisco, Eastern Virginia Medical Center, and Sanford Research Center (South Dakota). The University of Alabama at Birmingham and Vanderbilt University will be participating soon. The website will be updated when these sites begin enrolling. To date, 19 patients have been enrolled in the study.

Each patient will participate for 2 1Ú2 years. In addition to surgery to remove the papillomas, 6 months after enrollment patients will be given Celebrex for one year and a placebo for 1 year, the order in which they are taken will be determined randomly. To be eligible, patients must be at least 2 years old and must have had at least 3 surgeries in the past year to remove papillomas or have tracheal/bronchial disease.
