Hello. I was diagnosed with HPV of the vocal chords in 1991. Had about 8 laser surgeries since. I'm losing my voice again, but my ENT says he sees no evidence of pappilloma regrowth yet. Vocal chords just iritated and swollen, so my voice is very weak and hoarse. Very annoying!

HELLO MY NAME IS MELISSA AND I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH PAPILLOMAS ON MY VOCAL CORDS AT THE AGE OF 2, AND I WAS BORN WITH THEM, MY FIRST SURGEREY WAS DONE AT 2 UNFORTUNATELY NOT DONE BY LASER. AFTER MY FIRST SURGEREY AT 2, MANY SURGEREIES FOLLOWED, NUMEROUS IN A MONTH JUST TO CLEAR THE BLOCKAGE I HAD INCURRED, I WENT INTO REMISSION AT THE AGE OF 11, AND THEN HAD ANOTHER SURGEREY AT THE AGE OF 16, I HAVE BEEN IN REMISSION NOW SINCE THAT LAST SURGEREY. I AM NOW 24 AND IT IS TIME FOR ANOTHER SURGEREY, I AM QUITE HOARSE AND RASPY AND FEELING SELF CONSCIOUS. I FOUND THIS WEBSITE FOR THE FIRST TIME AND WAS SHOCKED TO FIND OUT THAT THERE WERE OTHERS LIKE ME, SO AS I GET READY FOR SURGEREY #25 I WILL GO THERE WITH ALL OF YOU IN MIND.

I am 57 yearsa old and was diagnosed with RRP in 1988. I have had 11 laser surgeries and am soon due for another. I'm really glad I stumbled upon this site today. I shall eagerly watch for new hope of a cure. In 1976 I had radiation therapy for cancer and lost my voice. I have always wondered if this was in some way the trigger that caused it.

The main reason for this is because I could never find a good resource or research about RRP. That is, until I found this website. Thank you for providing the information that you do.

My daughter Mia was diagnosed at age 1yr.3mo. with RRP. She has had 14 surgeries from age 1yr. 3mo. to 5yrs. At the age of 5, her last surgery, the doctor decided to do reconstructive surgery on her next visit to the hospital, since she appeared to be in remission. So we did the reconstructive surgery and it was a success! My husband and I remembered her always saying she wished people could hear her and how she wished she could sing like her sister. Well after the surgery I wouldn't let her talk for the first three days so it could heal. So on the fourth day she asked if she could talk and I said "OK, but not alot and don't yell" And she went off talking softly. My husband came home and we jumped in the car to go to our favorite restraunt and on the way My husband and I were talking, the radio was on and my older daughter was singing as usual, but all of a sudden we heard a second voice. I turned to secretly get my husbands attention, but he had already noticed, so the both of us sat in the front crying quietly and happily drove past our favorite restraunt to hear the rest of the song being sung so beautifly by our two daughters. Mia has been in remission since, she is 9 1/2 now. She does have asthma also, but that doesn't stop her. She plays soccer and is one of the best, also karate in which she recieved 1st place in forms and sparring, and swimming she recieved many ribbons and awards. I am very proud of her and her accomplishments. I still fear the future of the unknown and possible reaccurance. I thank the Lord for today and I pray for the future, and we accept what the Lord brings, it is HIS plan and I trust in him.

I was diagnosied with papiloma growth on my vocal cords when I was six years old. I am now 25 years old. My pediatrician sent me to a ENT at Shands hospital named Dr. George T. Singelton. At that time around the early 80's he was the only one in Florida who would preform the kind of surgery I needed. My parents took me to see Dr. Singelton when I was about 6 he then preform 19 surgerys on my vocal cords untill I was 12 years old when a miracle happened. During all these years my parents were told that I would never have more then 20 percent of my voice if I had any. They also told them it would be very likely I would have to have a tracheotomey the rest of life. Well the miracle happened at about 11 years old the growth just stoped but there was still alot of scare tissue they had to split so they split the scare tissue. Well the mircale was that after my last surgery to the amazement of the Dr. I had 80 percent of my voice back which was truly a miracle. I have no problems or reoccurances. I have not even seen an ENT after that. I thank God for the miracle he gave me and I thank Dr. Singelton for the gift he gave me because I am now teaching children with Autism Language skills that I would have never been able to teach before. My heart and my paryers go out to all that you may find the miracle I found.

Very interesting site... I was just diagnosed with RRP @ KU Medical Center in KC, KS. What a shock at age 30! I have had previous trouble breathing while doing heavy work but didn't think too much about it until I lost my voice in April of 2000. Due to lack of funds and no insurance, I put off seeking medical attention until I relocated to Kansas and found it very difficult to find work without a voice. After reading some of the other comments on this site I don't feel very optimistic about ever having a voice again. (very depressing) Thanks for making this site available.

My son was dignosed at 7 months of age when he nearly died of blocked airway. For the beggining months of his life i never heard him cry, i took him to so many doctors. They finally said he had blocked tear ducts ya right that was 2 days before he almost died. At childrens the only thing that saved him was a young intern who noticed his ribs turned out because of him breathing so hard. And that intern had read an article on RRP. That intern was my sons Guardian angel He called all the right docs and Khari was rushed to the emergency room for his first laser. My son is now going to be 7 in March. He has had over 100 surgeries we stopped counting. They told us when he was 3 that he wouldnt see is next Birthday, look at him keep going. I think the Doctors forget the Power of the Soul and what love can accomplish. I dont know what will happen tommorow but i have been blessed with the most amazing Son anyone could ask for i am grateful just wanted to share that with you.

I am 44 years old and have been fighting this terrible disease for 8 years. I still do not fully understand what triggers it. I have had several surgeries over the years and after a while the papillomas were not my biggest enemy. The scar tissue from repeated laser surgery started to reduce the size of my airway. After several attempts to remove scar tissue without success I underwent a supraglottic laryngectomy. This process took out everything above my vocal chords. I had to learn how to swallow using several techniques given to me by a speech pathologist. I am still recovering and hope this nightmare will end soon. If you have similar problems please contact me with information. I would like to hear from anyone....Iwould like to add your name to my prayer list. May God bless each and everyone of you.

2 cups of broccoli a day!! After reading about studies to determine whether nutritional therapy might decrease recurrence of papilloma growths, this 50yr old man with 11 surgeries in the past 14months had a new point of view about eatin' his veggies. Studies show a compound in broccoli induces certain hormones to be modified so they no longer promote growths. 'The jury is still out.' I will respond to all.....

I was diagnosed at the age of 10 and told I would grow out of it. I guess I haven't grown up yet because I'm now 38 and looking forward to surgery #44. I seem to be getting worse with time; they are spreading and my last several biopsies have been pre-cancer. The worst part . . . depression . . . it is so difficult and painful to talk that I withdraw from everyone and can't seem to get on top of my health problems. It seems to me that my immune system is exhausted from trying to fight. I am so relieved to find this group, I have been feeling very hopeless and alone with all of this. There is definitely strength in numbers, especially when it comes to prayer and searching for answers to a seemingly hopeless situation.

My daughter, Laken Palmer was diagnosed with rrp at 10 mo,we lost her father in a car accident when she was 18 mo, she was trached on her 2nd birthday because the scar tissue webbed across her airway after having surgery every 7-10 days for 13 months. At the age of 3, I was giving her daily injections of interferon. At 4 years we added I3C and were still doing the interferon, but nothing was helping. At 5 years old, Laken's CT scan showed there were several masses of papilloma in one of her lungs, she was given 2 years to live.Laken was 7 years old when I was told there wasn't much time left for her, and that is when I decided on Dr. Nigel Pashley in Denver,Colorodo and his Mumps vaccine treatments.Since October 1999,Laken has had 2 airway reconstuctions with a rib graft and 20 laser surgeries being injected each time with the mumps vax. And we stopped all other drugs, interferon and I3C. Laken is now 9 years old and she is still hanging in there. She gives us all hope. Anyone who needs to talk please e-mail me, it is very srtessful,I know after going through this alone with her for 8 years.

I am 31 yrs old. I was dianosed when I was 22. I have had 10 surgeries. I went to the doctor in October of 2001, and it was not back. It has been 1 year since my last surgery (10/16/00), and that is a big relief. I love the news letters. They are very informative. Thanks for all your work!!

I was diagnosed finally with RRP on Friday August 24th on my third surgery since april 99. This surgery was done by Dr. Robert Ossoff in Nashville, TN. at Vanderbuilt. Vanderbuilt is a teaching hospital and Dr. Ossoff is teaching new interns about RRP. He has voiced a concern that we the rrp community need to be more public about our disease so we can get money for research. Since I have just been diagnosed for sure all I cn say is that I am reading as much material as I can get my hands on and I would like to help all the people out there diagnosed with rrp in any way I can. My heart bleeds for all but even more for the children diagnosed with this disease. If I can help in any way. I would like to.

My son Coty was diagnosed with this virus at age 18 months old. I had always tried to do research on this, but could never be of much success. Even after time and time again asking each doctor if there was any other proceedure or anything on this disease. No one has EVER directed me to any foundations, organizations or anything at all. I had no idea of such. Everyone around here acts as if it is a very rare disease and have no information on this. I found Dr. Nigel Pashley by accident when I noticed the front page of the Commercial Appeal. I could not believe what I read and especially about the 75,000 people that have died. I freaked and started looking for this doctor. Now I found him and this great site. Maybe I can start getting somewhere now. We will be going to Denver to see Dr. Pashley in early June.

My granddaughter was just diagnosed with RRP. I've been an obstetrical nurse for 27 years and never knew such a disease even existed. It is imperative that we get the Academy of Obstetrics and Gynecology to recommend that all obtetricians council their patients with HPV on the risks of possibly passing the virus unto their infants through vaginal deliveries. I know thatmy daughter would have opted to have an elective section if she knew there was even the remotest chance of passing on the virus to her infant. Apparently ACOG made the decision for us to assume the risk. Needless to say I'm angry.

My daughter suffered from laryngeal pappilomatosis from the time she was born till she was four. She went for a number of surgeries at" Sick Kids".My daughter also had to get daily injections of "Interferon" to help slow the rapid growth down.Today she is totally healed Thank God.I still to this day do not know what causes it.For some reason my family believes that because she had this illness since birth, maybe I gave it to her. I need to know what exactly what this illness is and what causes it.If anyone could help me by emailing me with info. regarding this matter I would greatly appreciate it.I tried asking the doctor what causes this but he told me anumber of things could cause it,not really giving me a substantial answer on it.If anyone has any info. on this ,please email me at xndrex@hotmail.com Thankyou, you will be helping me greatly. My main question is ;can this be passed from mother to child?what causes it and what is it really? My daughter was diagnosed with juvenile laryngeal papilloma when she was 2 years old she is 7 now. She has went through 58 surgerys. Me and my husband really dont know much about this virus. Her doctor has told us that the only thing available is to have the laser surgery. We have also been told that the virus should go away but there has been no luck. If there is anyone who knows any other medications or therapies that are available PLEASE contact me. This past surgery has left our daughter only being able to whisper and is causing alot of problems in school. After looking over this site i have read alot of stories about rrp i really had no idea there were so many out there. Any information would be grately appreciated

Our daughter was diagnosed with papillomas just before her 2nd birthday. Her case is considered aggressive due to their rapid return. She is four now and has had 18 surgeries to date. She has been lucky to be a part of a study locally that combines the laser excision of these papillomas with the use of Cidofovir, and anti viral that has shown some very positive results.

Thanks to Bill and Marlene Stern, and to all those who have contributed their knowledge, input and support. I know little about this disease other than what I have read, though there is a remote possibility I may have contracted it, by having imtimate contact with a woman I love dearly. Marlene. Thank you for the referral to your site, again, it NOW has significant meaning in my life...and hopefully I can share it with you know who!

The last one being June '99, so I'm hoping this means he's in remission but it's to soon to tell, he is still getting his three months checkup with his ENT doctor. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the Stern's. They gave hope and knowledge to all who needed to learn about this disease. Our daughter Annie, had about 15 operations during a three year period. She's been in remission for about 6 years and is currently 12 years old. We had her on I3C for about 2 years with no obvious improvement. Over time we we became less diligent in giving Annie the I3C. About 2 months later she went into remission. I thought some of you would like to know that miracles happen. Again, thanks Bill and Marlene!

My 14 1/2 year old son has had LP for going on 8 years now. The Navy was treating him every four weeks with a direct microlaryngoscopy w/co2 excision, but Jameses surgeon is being transferred. We had our first surgery with a "suction debreater". Kinda like a razor with a vacuum behind it. Has anyone else heard of this machine? He is being treated at Nemour's and Wolfson's Hospital in the Jacksonville area, and I do not know that this new surgery is any better than a laser. Any one else here in Jax?

My almost eight year old son Ryan has RRP. He was diagnosed in 1995 and had seven surgeries during that year, the last one on December 5th, 1995. He has been in remission since then. I am afraid that is it back. He is choking on his food alot all of a sudden. This just started this week. We are really scared and are realizing that we were in denial. We really thought he was better for good. Well, now I have to get a hold of his previous surgeon and get the medical records and start the search for a new surgeon in our area. We used to live in Springfield, Missouri but now we need a surgeon here in California. If there are any families out here in the California Bay Area or near Sacramento, please email us right away if you know of a surgeon we can call. We have Kaiser medical insurance and I believe we are in a hurry. It is Sunday and Ryan has not eaten for two days because he is afraid he will choke. I am going to take him in tomorrow to start the process but would appreciate any help finding a great surgeon. Sorry to ramble on... pray for us. Thanks, Rene'e & Ryan

I have had a problem with RPP since I was about 14 years old and now I am 45. I have had many surgeries and treatments non of which have had a long lasting impact. I am hopeful about the new anti-virus research that is going on, in some cases purtaining to other problems, which hopefully will eventually bring this this problem under control. Meanwhile, all we can do is patiently wait and make the best of the situation living with this virus.

My daughter Dara is 12 years old. She is getting ready to her her 26th surgery. She was diagnosed at 4 years old. Compared to many others we have read about, Dara considers herself lucky to have had only this many. I admire her for her stoicism. We also are extremely grateful for the Sterns and everybody else who has allowed the RRPF Newsletter to continue as it has. This is the only avenue I have been able to obtain information from besides a medical library. Thank you.

MY DAUGHTER WAS DIAGNOISED WITH RRP AT EIGHTEEN MONTHS AND 72 SURGURIES BEHIND HER.SHE HAS GONE INTO REMISSION FOR THE LAST SIX MONTHS WITH NO OCCURENCE.THANKS TO A NEW TREATMENT CALLED CIDOFOVIR. THIS TREATMENT HAS SAVED MY DAUGHTER'S LIFE AND HAS GIVEN OTHER RRP PATIENTS A LIFE WITH LESS SURGERIES.

My husband was diagnosed at the age of 4. He spent a huge amount of time in the hospital prevous to laser surgery at the age of 7 he was trac'd. He is a otherwise healthy man with three children, a good job, home ect. For all of you with young children -- he is leading a decent life. Have faith, his faith sustains us!

My 22month old son was diagnosed with RRP about four weeks ago. Since then, he has had two treatments of Cidofovir. After his first treatment, my son's father and I had noticed a dramatic change in our son's voice. We couldn' be more pleased with the results, but at the same time discovering that my son had this illness happened suddenly. What I do not understand is that my son is a twin and his twin brother is not affected by this at all. Any answers???

We finally got on line and wanted to let everyone know how much we appreciate getting the newsletters. It is comforting in a way to know that we are not alone. My son Colby, age 8, was diagnosed at the age of four.It was quite a struggle getting our doctor to finally recognize that there was a problem. We then found a wonderful Doctor at Columbus Childrens hospital. Dr. D. Willett introduced us to the foundation, he has performed 7 surgerys on Colby and has him on Indoplex. It has only been 8 mos. since he began the medication so there are no big results to date. We are scheduled for another surgery on April 17, please keep Colby in your prayers.

Hi guys I finally have a way to tell everyone just how great your foundation is. My son Wade had his first surgery 3 days before he turned 5. He is now 13 and has had over 50 surgeries. If it wasn't for your letters I received through the years I think I might have lost it. Up here in Brockville no one seemed to know much if anything about RRP. Sometimes it felt like Wade and I were the only ones going through this, but after receiving information from your foundation it was a bit easier to deal with knowing there was so many other people going through the same thing. If anyone feels like talking about what they are going through I be happy to listen. Contact me at rogerfox@ripnet.com

Well I figured I'd save the best for last, on September 2, 1999 (my birthday) Wade went in for another surgery and we couldn't beleive it the doctors found nothing. He still has to be checked but up till now there has been no more surgeries. I still hope and pray that someday soon a cur ewill be found. Once again thanks .

I am 28 years old now. I experienced adult onset of RRP at the age of 19. At the worst I had surgery every 9 months. I thought my cross was too much to bear until I found the RRPF. I now realize how lucky I am and how non-aggresive my disease is. My heart goes out to the brave children who battle RRP on a day-to-day basis, and still keep a positive attitude. God bless you all. My 10 month old beautiful son Mitchell, is going to Children's Hospital for surgery on Feb. 29th for the first time. We don't know if it is RRP yet, (not until they are biopsied), and I prayer this is not the case. Anyway, this is an informative site and I appreciate your phone call Marlene. Please say a prayer for my beautiful son.
Thank you,
Diane

My son was dianosed with RRP at the age of 5months. He has had 9 laser surgeries and is on Interferon. I am so glad this website is avaiable so I can get informed about this disease. I wish I had some support down in this island though. I really need to talk with people who have had or have family with this disease. It would help me and my son greatly. Thank you.

Please accept Esther and my thanks, Bill and Marlene, and all the other RRPF volunteers and members for all you do to
improve awareness and communications in the RRP community. This website and our RRPF listserve is now linking the community in new and wonderful ways. Thank your for taking the responsibilities for these important initiatives. We hope that as the RRP community becomes aware of the Foundation, it will be supported vigorously to push for more awareness, information, research and priority for treatment. Thanks you, and best wishes to all for years of good health.

In 1992 shortly after our daughter Lindsay was diagnosed with RRP, we started the RRP Foundation in an attempt to reach out and talk to others in similar situations who could understand what we were going through. The evolution of the internet and the web has made communicating with others throughout the RRP community so much easier.
